Trendz Watch Spring/Summer 2009

Almost anything goes when it comes to this year’s spring fashion. From the crazier the better Geometric Prints to simply chic Faded Florals the spectrum of “IT” things this year is extensive. Among the many trendz to look for as the warm weather arrives are Gigantic Jewels, Character Jewelry, and the return of the Hippie and the Hobo Bag.

As far as colors and prints are concerned, the spectrum is again, wider than wide. While Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli and Nina Ricci are introducing pastel florals reminiscent of Grandma’s coveted chiffon scarf, designers like Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Dries Van Noten are going with a more “shapely” approach to spring fashion. If Geometry was a nightmare in high school, watch out! It’s coming back to haunt you. But this time around, own it with bright-colored, statement-making prints full of those once-loathed trapezoids, circles and triangles.

Metallics are once again back with a boom and Gold is heard loudest of all this spring. Platinum and Silver definitely make their presence known, but Gold steals the show. Design houses like Vera Wang, Prada, Ralph Lauren, and Jean Paul Gautlier are loving the metallics and playing obvious favorites with gold. Keep your eyes peeled for Gold, Silver, Platinum, and more gold in handbags, jewelry, shoes and even clothing.

The Queen’s Crown Jewels have some competition this spring with the rocks being spotted on the runways and in store windows. From giant jeweled cuff bracelets to bedazzled evening bags with more bling than fabric, these trendz were created to make the trendsetter feel and look like a princess and they do their job well. Big colorful stones a lot of times stacked and layered to make statement pieces any girl would die for.

These giant jewels are included in what Vogue is calling “Character Jewelry”, jewelry that has a character of its own. Size is definitely a factor and as always, the bigger the better. From Vera Wang’s multistrand, waist long necklace made from huge blue beads to Chanel’s cluster of enamel flowers adorned on gold chains to the baseball-sized golden jingle bells hanging off of what must be 50 pounds of gold by Dries Van Noten, they definitely do have character and also, the power to instantly update even the simplest of outfits.

While today’s trendsetter isn’t driving around in a Volkswagen van protesting the war, fashionably, the hippie has returned. We can’t get enough of flower power headbands and peace signs galore. Inspirational symbols and phrases adorn our jewelry preaching peace and love. And the hippie has brought back her faithful friend, the Hobo bag to make a reappearance in stores this spring. The large, softly structured bag is seen interpreted many ways this spring by designers like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Marni, and Derek Lam.

The List is endless when it comes to spring trendz. Keep your eyes on Oliverstrendz.com for more updates.
